In a surprise story even for the silly season of August there are reports that recent DNA test suggest that Adolf Hitler, Leader of the Third Reich and White Aryan supremacist was in fact descended from African Berbers and Ashkenazi Jews.
The Flemish-language magazine Knack sent investigative journalist Jean-Paul Mulders on a mission to trace Hitler’s living relatives in his native Austria, as well as the United States. Geneticists identify groups of chromosomes called haplogroups, ‘genetic fingerprints’ that define populations.
That Hitler the most fascist and racist white supremacist the world has ever seen should be seen as originating from African and Jewish stock could be seen as an effort to somehow diminish white responsibility for Hitler’s fascist campaign and suggest that in some way the victims of the Nazi terror were in someway culpable for the holocaust. Of course such views are repellent with Hitler representing the epitome of white supremacist views nothing could be further the truth.
The counter view would be of course that the man who pursued the nightmare of developing a pure Ayran Race actually descended form the people he despised with a venomous hatred.
Mulders reports that Hitler’s dominant haplogroup, E1b1b, whilst relatively rare in Western Europe populations but strongest in some 25 percent of Greeks and Sicilians, who acquired the genes from Africa: Between 50 percent and 80 percent of North Africans share Hitler’s dominant group, which is especially prevalent among in the Berber tribes of Morocco, Algeria and Tunisia, and Somalis.
“The results of this study are surprising,” said Ronny Decorte, a geneticist interviewed by Knack. “Hitler would not have been happy.”
More surprising still, perhaps, is that Hitler’s second most dominant haplogroup is the most common in Ashkenazi Jews.
“The findings are fascinating if you look at them in terms of the Nazi worldview, which ascribed such an extreme priority to notions of blood and race,” Decorte said.
“For modern science, there are no more races.T his pure type of ‘superman’ and the [Nazi] breeding programs to perfect ‘purity’ were sheer fabrication.”
Whatever the truth of the story the reality is that some 70 years since the rise of the Third Reich racism and anti semitism remain one of the most pernicious legacies of what was one the most heinous crimes in the 20th Century.
