Musician and budding politician Wyclef Jean has confirmed his decision to stand as a presidential candidate at the forthcoming Haitian elections in November.
The singer/ rapper has ended speculation following widely circulated rumours that he would run amid a backdrop of criticisms that his Haiti earthquake charity was riddled with financial irregularities.
Despite the criticisms Jean has remained an outspoken champion for the Haitian people, as while developed nations were quick to pledge help when the disaster struck six months ago, money raised by several leading organisations has yet to filter through to the masses.
Jean, will represent the the recently-formed Ansanm Nou Fo (“Together we are strong”) coalition.
The rapper follows in the footsteps of celebrity presidential candidates, actor, Ronald Reagan and footballer Georg Weah. Weah ran for President in Liberia in 2005, but failed to win votes largely because of his inexperience.
