International human rights organisations and campaign groups have hit out at the ‘partial’ lifting by Israel of the blockade of Gaza.
The profile of the blockade which affects around 1.5 million Palestinians has been raised in recent weeks after Israeli commandos assaulted an aid Flotilla of unarmed aid workers and activists resulting in 9 deaths. The assault on the Flotilla amounted to piracy in international waters.
Today International campaign organisations and human rights groups have called Israel’s partial lift of the blockade-allowing some necessities through but not enough- inadequate and have called for a complete lift of the blockade.
The Israeli Defence Minister has warned that should a Lebanese flotilla which is destined for Gaza with activists on-board seek to breach the blockade, Lebanon will be responsible for any “violent and dangerous confrontation”
Salam Kanaan, of Save the Children, said:
“Simply easing the blockade by allowing more goods in is not enough. What about sick children who need life-saving medical attention out of Gaza? Will they and their families be allowed to move freely across the border?”
