One of the men suspected of murdering teenager Stephen Lawrence could be heading to jail after being embroiled in drugs charges.
Gary Dobson 34, who many believe was one of the men who murdered Lawrence, was caught by police on camera in the middle of a drug deal with Stephen Fennell. The two were arrested after £350,000 of cannabis along with a large quantity of cocaine was found at the residence of Fennell.
Dobson pleaded guilty in Kingston Crown Court for supplying Fennell with 50 kilos of cannabis. He also pleaded guilty to possessing 4.9 kilos of cannabis with intent to supply. Sentencing will take place on July 9th.
Dobson, Neil Acourt, Luke Knight, Jamie Acourt, and David Norris were all cleared of killing Stephen.
Failings by the police in the handling of the investigation in the aftermath of the murder, and the manner in which they treated the Lawrence family, at the time caused outrage from the public. The pressure from the public along with relentless campaigning from the Lawrence family led to the Macpherson enquiry in 1997.
Lord Macpherson’s report which followed ruled that the Metropolitan Police force was institutionally racist. Many argue that it still is.
