Labour leader hopeful Diane Abbott received another boost to her campaign with a pledge of support from Jon Cruddas, the highly respected left leaning MP.
Cruddas opted not to run for the Labour leader position, but has reportedly decided to give Abbott his nomination in a bid to ensure the leadership contest is as broad as possible.
His nomination brings to Abbott’s backers to 6, and includes David Lammy and Chinyelu Onwurah.
With just a week to go before nominations close, half of the declared candidates – Andy Burnham, Diane Abbott and John McDonnell – are still struggling to secure the required nominations to be on the ballot.
It is hoped that Cruddas’ support would encourage other undecided MPs to support Abbott to ensure that party members have the widest possible choice of candidates.
