Umunna: rising up

Chuka Umunna M.P. for Streatham has received warm words of praise in The Voice newspaper this week, in an article which sets out the 31 year old’s plan of improving the constituency he was born, raised, and still lives in.

Comparisons early on in Umunna’s campaign to Barack Obama, and recent calls from one or two for Umunna to stand for the leadership, speak of the potential that Umunna has to really do something positive. It’s early on, but there’s a lot to be hopeful about. Chuka remains grounded though.

When I asked Umunna last year what he thought of the comparisons to Obama he remarked to me “I’m happy being Streatham’s Chuka”.

Not surprising then that in this week’s edition of The Voice, in response to leadership calls he said:

“I just want to make sure I am the very best Member of Parliament for Streatham right now.”

OBV will be interviewing Chuka later this month.
