Judge out of order

And justice for who?

A Judge has been severely reprimanded after making potentially racist comments in relation to a sentencing a black man of Jamaican descent.
The man who was jailed for two years after admitting possession of cocaine and cannabis also had a fake passport and stolen vehicle was sentenced in Liverpool Crown Court in 2009.

Judge Ian Trigger told the man in open court that:
“Your case illustrates all too clearly the completely lax immigration policy that exists and has existed over recent years in this country.”

He added “People like you, and there are literally hundreds and hundreds of thousands of people like you, come to these shores from foreign countries to avail themselves of the generous welfare benefits that exist here.”

The Lord Chief Justice investigated the comments after a complaint was made. He found that Judge Triggers comments were “wholly unrelated to any of the issues which arose for consideration in his sentencing decision”. Subsequently, Judge Trigger was then given “formal words of advice.

Racism in the British criminal justice system is rife and both Magistrates and Justices routinely discriminate in their judgments when it comes to black defendants. Such a mild rebuke will do nothing to redress what is an extremely worrying trend in British courts.
