Asian Conservative Candidate told she’s not British

Norsheen Bhatti and David Cameron

Conservative Parliamentary candidate Norsheen Bhatti was the subject of a racist jibe from her BNP opponent at a debate event recently.

Bhatti, PPC for Stoke Central, was taking part in a public debate on Wednesday 28 April about the future of a school in the Bentilee district.

Responding to a resident’s question, Miss Bhatti commented: “there is nothing British about the BNP”.

However BNP deputy leader Simon Darby retorted: “I’m more British than you are.”

After she demanded an explanation, Darby told the Birmingham-born candidate: “You made a personal attack on me and you got one back.”

The Liberal Democrat John Redfern, refused to attend the debate because he did not wish to share a platform with the BNP member.

Bhatti, 33, was selected as the Conservative prospective parliamentary candidate for Stoke Central in December 2009 as a part of the Conservative City Seat Initiative.

The debate was organised by the Community School Action Group, which is battling to keep a school open on a site in Bucknall, but the Stoke-on-Trent City Council reportedly plans to merge the school with another to create a new academy.

Darby told the audience that he was opposed to forcing white and Muslim pupils to mix.

At the beginning of the debate, Bhatti asked organisers to move her after discovering that she had been seated next to Darby.

The campaign group, Nothing British about the BNP, have called on the public to send a message to Darby that his party’s policies were segregationist and extremist.

One Response

  1. What a truly horrible man, representing a truly nasty party!

With any luck Norsheen will get a strong sympathy vote after this. I wish her the very best of luck.
