BNP drops Nazi salute candidate

The British National Party says that it has dumped its candidate in the Orsett ward of Thurrock, after claims that he was connected to rivals the UK Independence Party (UKIP).

As reported on OBV blog, Mark O’Nion was pictured on the social networking site Facebook allegedly making a Nazi salute. The BNP moved to distance itself from him, alleging that he was planted as a ‘mole’ by UKIP and that his aunt was the UKIP candidate for the ward, Marie Andrews.

According to the Thurrock Gazette, the local party tried to take O’Nion off the candidate list, but missed the 13 April deadline. He therefore remains as the official party candidate.

BNP parliamentary candidate for Thurrock, Emma Colgate, said: “We’ve taken all the steps that we can. We took action as soon as we knew, but we missed the cut off point to withdraw the candidate.”

UKIPs Kerry Smith, who is the prospective Parliamentary candidate for East Thurrock, confirmed that Marie Andrews and Mark O’Nion are related, but was furious about the claims, saying his party is considering taking legal action over the matter.

He said: “This is a really deplorable, petty and sick attack by the BNP to cover up their own errors in selecting candidates. I am calling on the BNP to immediately apologise to my candidate. Marie is quite upset with the bully boy tactics. We are now looking into suing the BNP.”

The anti-fascist campaign group ‘There is Nothing British about the BNP’ had called on the party’s leader Nick Griffin, to sack O’Nion to affirm the party’s commitment to remove bigoted and misogynistic members.
