Labour PPC’s slave remarks more than ‘Foolish’ (updated)

The Labour Party cannot brush aside Maclennan’s comments as just ‘foolish’. Maclennan must know that the Caribbean islands, where most of Britain’s Banana come from, where based wholly and solely on slave trade. Maclennan’s remarks demonstrate gross insensitivity that panders to racial prejudice.

We don’t believe that Maclennan’s comments deserve a sacking, but he needs some sanction, and must give a profound apology and a donation to the Caribbean Fair Trade, might go some way into restoring his very tarnished reputation.

Update: Stuart Maclennan has been removed as PPC. Gordon Brown released this statement:

“A candidate has made a mistake. It’s unacceptable. That candidate has got to resign. I have made it absolutely clear what my views are: we cannot have people standing as candidates for the Labour party who express these views, so that candidate will not be a candidate for the Labour.”
