Labour candidate wins safe seat

Valerie Vaz, sister of Keith Vaz, is likely to become an MP

Valerie Vaz, the sister of veteran MP Keith Vaz, is set to join her brother in Westminster after she was picked to run in a safe Labour seat.

Valerie Vaz as a Network East presenter in the 80s

A former TV presenter, Valerie Vaz won the contest to stand in Walsall South, where she will defend a strong 8,000 Labour majority.

Vaz beat ex-MEP Neena Gill, Sandra Samuels, a nurse and Wolverhampton councillor, and political insider Sue Hayman.

The result will bolster Labour’s claim to stay ahead of the Conservatives in terms of the number of black and Asian MPs.

She said: “I am privileged to have been selected by the Labour Party members in Walsall South as their candidate in the General Election. All my life I have fought for social justice and issues that matter to hard working families.

“Together with those who care about Walsall South, we will fight to win the election and we will win back the council for Labour.”
