Mann ready for battle in Herts

Labour have picked Harinder Mann to fight the Hertfordshire South West seat at the next general election.

The former alumni on Operation Black Vote’s MP shadowing scheme, previously stood in North Yorkshire at the 2005 poll.

Dr Mann, 33, who runs the parliamentary office for the former foreign office minister John Battle, paid tribute to the OBV scheme for helping equip him to seek office.

He is relishing the fight against the incumbent Tory MP David Gauke, and is also keen to take on the British National Party, who have a local councillor in the constituency.

A part-time lecturer at the London School of Economics, he recently graduated with a doctorate from the same university.

Dr Mann said that Black and minority ethnic politicians could now contest seats where there are hardly any people of colour. ‘We don’t have to be pigeon-hold into just representing seats with a large ethnic minority population’, he said.

He also heaped praise on OBV’s Simon Woolley for encouraging him on his political journey.
