Sharpton rings the alarm

‘Wake up Black Britain’ is the front-page headline in today’s Voice newspaper, as it reports on the visit of Rev Al Sharpton last week.

The article also covers the meeting between the US civil rights leader and UK black church leaders, held at the paper’s Docklands offices.

Rev Sharpton told the Voice: “I’m going to work with these black churches. I think black ministers do not use their influence enough to get their congregants to vote and understand the power of the vote.”

He said that past struggles to get the vote meant there was no excuse for “laziness” at election time. And he revealed plans to hold an international conference for the African Diaspora in April.

And asked about the American president, he responded: “I often say we found out that Obama couldn’t walk on water but he’s still the best swimmer we have.”
