It’s shaping up to be Britain’s best online battle as two of the most web-savvy politicians go head-to-head in an Obama-style internet campaign.
Labour’s Kerry McCarthy, dubbed the “Twitter Czar”, now has computer competition for her Bristol East seat, from the Conservative’s Adeela Shafi.
Psychology lecturer Shafi is confident she can beat McCarthy on-screen as well as on the streets. Her new campaign website enables supporters to volunteer and make donations.
Shafi told OBV Blog that while the worldwide web can never replace pounding the local area as “they are complementary.”
She added: “With more and more people online, being online is like being in the High Street. It’s about being more able to get people involved in the manner of Barack Obama’s campaign.”
Her efforts won praise from Tory blogger Iain Dale, who noted the fact that Shafi was taking on Labour’s internet star McCarthy.
One benefit about online campaigning is that both candidates can gain practical help and cash from outside their local area. Shafi is appealing for helpers anywhere in the country to give 15 minutes of their time for telephone canvassing.
Let the e-battle commence!
