Of course we’re patriotic

For those who have long argued that it’s the Far Right who need to undergo citizenship tests, news that Muslims are the most patriotic does not come as a huge surprise.

The Sunday Times says a Europe-wide survey has found that 94% of UK-born Muslims feel British, a figure much higher than for Muslims on the continent.

These findings are very much in line with the experience of Black communities, where first generations have historically tried extremely hard to fit in and contribute to the economy, and are often the most enthusiastic about Britain despite immigrants from the 1950s onwards enduring harsh racism.

Subsequent British-born generations have also strived to carve out their place as black-British, Asian-British etc. That feelings of Britishness remain so high is a cause for celebration, but also calls for a recognition that immigrants – and their offspring – choose to look beyond experiences of racism when it comes to their identity.

By contrast, the British National Party says that the existence of Black communities threatens to destroy Britain, thus proving that if anyone is likely to let colour get in the way of national identity, it is the BNP and their supporters.
