Excuse me? Where can I find bin Laden?

Britain’s security services are approaching Muslim students in Britain to ask them “do you know where Osama bin Laden is?”, according to Eastern Eye.

The Asian weekly newspaper says that MI5 agents and Special Branch officers are visiting UK universities to quiz students about whether they have met the elusive al-Qaeda leader.

The paper quotes a London student named only as Zulfi, who said: “I thought it was a prank at first and I felt very scared and paranoid after the incident.”

The Islamic Human Rights Commission report being “inundated” with cases of students asked about bin Laden’s whereabouts.

We’ve heard some farcical stories concerning MI5 before, but this one really does take the biscuit. If true, not only does it reek of crude stereotyping of Muslims, but in the unlikely event of any student having met bin Laden they are hardly going to confess all to an agent.

They’d be better off asking taxi drivers on the Pakistan-Afghanistan border. Then again, maybe not…
