Welsh Nats lose defector to Tories

The Conservatives gained their first BME Welsh assembly member today, when Plaid Cymru’s Mohammad Asghar defected to David Cameron’s party.

Asghar, an accountant, made history in 2007 when he became the first politician of colour to be elected to devolved governing body for Wales. But after two years he’s thrown in his lot with the Welsh nationalists claiming he felt like “a parrot in a jungle.”

The South Wales Argus reports that Asghar, known in Cardiff as Oscar, felt “out of tune” with the policies of Plaid.

Speaking at a press conference earlier today, Asghar said: “I am attracted by the caring Conservatism and policies for change put forward by David Cameron and the Conservative Party at Westminster.”

Welsh Conservative Assembly leader Nick Bourne added: “I am delighted that Oscar is going to be part of our Assembly team in the run-up to the next Assembly elections.

“He is a man who commands respect within the Assembly and the communities of South Wales East.”
