Karim’s a super-euro

Sajjad Karim, the first Muslim elected to the European Parliament, has been promoted to the frontbench of his Conservative team.

By Angela Hinds

Karim, based in Chorlton in Greater Manchester, now takes on the role of European Legal Affairs spokesperson responsible for formulating legislation for 27 countries.

He commented: “It is a challenge but I am sure that my experience from industry and private practice will stand me in good stead to deliver workable policy and legislation.

“It is fascinating that my experiences as a solicitor in Manchester will have an input in drafting legislation for EU application.”

Amongst questions he has proposed to the European Parliament are violence against Christian minorities in India, gender equality and abuses against domestic workers across the globe.

Karim was elected to the European Parliament in June 2004. In his first term he served on the Human Rights Committee and now serves on the Industry, Research & Energy Committee. He is vice president of the European Parliament Anti-Racism and Diversity intergroup.
