Blogger rapped over dead solider jibe

Lib Dem blogger Irfan Ahmed has closed his website down after provoking a storm of protest in the North with his comments that the families of soldiers killed Iraq and Afghanistan were “enjoying nice salaries” as a result.

Following a howl of outrage in the Burnley Citizen newspaper Ahmed has now closed his blog and issued a grovelling apology.

The website Political Scrapbook led the condemnation of Ahmed, who wrote on his blog: “The parents of the lost children have enjoyed the nice salaries that their children have been earning from the army.”

However, the Burnley Citizen quotes Ahmed apologising for causing offence. He says: “I am sorry for making comments that might have caused problems for anyone or comments which might have led to heartache. The comments were out of order and I would like to apologise to everyone and anyone offended.”

Given that this is not the first time Ahmed, from Pendle, Lancashire, has caused offence he will no doubt have to be a lot more careful, sensitive and thoughtful, should he decide to re-enter the blogosphere.
