Lay off Semenya says Ohuruogu

caster-makoverOlympic gold medallist Christine Ohuruogu has leapt to the defence of fellow athlete Caster Semenya, saying that the South African has had “her whole life turned upside down”

Speaking to OBV Blog, Ohuruogu sympathised with the plight of Semenya, pictured above after a magazine makeover, who is still waiting for tests to verify her gender following suspicions that she was not a woman.

It’s being reported that Semenya could be stripped of her gold medal, a move that would heighten tension between the IAAF and the South African government.

Britain’s Ohuruogu, who knows what it is like to be the subject a media firestorm after a ban for missing a drugs test, said that right now Semenya needed support not vilification.

She said: ‘It’s a delicate situation, people need to remember that. This is a girl who’s had her whole life turned upside down in front of the world, and we have to remember there’s a very young girl who’s in the midst of all that.

‘We should find a way to support her not bring her down because its through no fault of her own that this has happened.’

Some believe Semenya may be an hermaphrodite, with both male and female genes, but all the evidence points to the fact that she has been brought up as a woman.

  1. I wonder how supportive Christine would have been if she’d been beaten into second place (during her 400m Olympic 400m event) by a hermaphrodite that hadn’t had a proper sex test prior to the games and, consequently was allowed to run with three times the levels of testosterone than a normal woman……perhaps a little less sympathetic. Are the other women in Semenya’s race as suppotive as Christine? Sorry but if you eneter a women’s event you’d better be damn sure that you are officially classed as a women. No one is making you eneter these major events.
