EDL’s divide and rule doomed to failure

sikhsIt seems the English Defence League are trying to emulate the British National Party by trying (and no doubt failing) to reach out to Sikhs and Hindus in order to attack Muslims

Pickled Politics reports that their members forum have been discussing ways of enticing non-Muslim Asians into their fold, presumably so that they can claim they are not racist despite the presence of racist placards and slogans at their rallies.

The BNP have tried the same trick before when they ridiculously formed an “ethnic liaison committee” to liase, principally, with communities they felt were hostile to Muslims.

It certainly wasn’t to recruit new members, as we now know that non-whites are banned from joining the BNP; a matter that will be put before the courts, courtesy of a case being brought by Trevor Phillips’ Equality and Human Rights Commission.

The English Defence League, who appear to be taking their cue from the on-screen tensions between an Indian and a Pakistani character in the TV show Mind Your Language, are of course doomed to failure, as there is a great deal of unity between Sikhs, Hindus and Muslims.

This is the reason why the BNP’s tactic failed in 2001, and why EDL’s will fail today. Because Asian communities will never be divided and set against each other by the far right.
