Stepping up to the plate

Ashok-ViswanathanThe Welsh Assembly launched a new mentoring scheme yesterday, based on the model of Operation Black Vote’s successful shadowing scheme, which ran last year

OBV’s deputy director Ashok Viswanathan (pictured above) was in Cardiff to witness the launch of Step-up Cymru!, which aims to encourage a range of under-represented groups to get involved in politics.

Welsh Assembly members will be matched with Black aspiring politicians, as well as women and disabled people. Last month Adam Rees, from the Welsh Assembly wrote on this blog of his hopes for the scheme.

Viswanathan said: ‘I am pleased that the national Assembly for Wales has decided to continue with the OBV model of Shadowing programmes. Schemes such as this play an important role in transforming the make up of institutions such as the Senedd.

‘The Assembly must begin to look more like the people it serves and the diverse communties of Wales.  Only then will we re enage wider communties to play a full and positive role in the democratic and decsion-making process.’
