India drought off G20 agenda

indian-droughtIndia faces a severe drought that could push millions more into poverty and hunger, according to experts. Delayed monsoons, and the changing distribution of rain, are putting the country on course for its worst drought since 1972

Eastern Eye top highlight the worsening situation in the sub-continent, which is already pushing food prices and inflation up. India’s expected water shortage comes as the G20 group of nations, including India, meet in Pittsburgh.

Media reports suggest that climate change will take a backseat to sorting out the economy, despite the pressing need for a new treaty to replace Kyoto, which was agreed ten years ago and is about to run out.

At the moment India is not regarded by aid agencies as one of the most critical emergency regions.
