Surprise, surprise

Heather-Watson-celebrates-0Congratulations to rising tennis star Heather Watson, who achieved what no other British player has managed before by winning the girls’ singles title at the US Open

The 17-year-old from Guernsey, who’s mother comes from Papua New Guinea, has previously been overshadowed by Laura Robson, 15, even before Robson took the girl’s Wimbledon title last year. Let’s hope Watson goes on to become Britain’s equivalent of the Williams sisters.

Unfortunately Watson still has a bit of press coverage to make up on Robson. Despite winning the US Open title, a search on Google News reveals only 219 results for Watson over the past month, while Robson’s name brings up 326 results over the same period, despite her winning nothing during this period.

This included headlines such as US Open a breeze for Laura Robson (Daily Mail), Robson finds her stride to progress (The Times), and Robson into the quarters (Teletext). Result: Robson went out in the semi-finals.

    Keep smiling

  2. Well done to Heather, and wasnt it nice to hear that even with her recent success she is still focused on her education. A true star of the future.

    Brilliant.
