Black man on the Titanic

titanicDid you know there was a black man on the Titanic? Nope, well neither did I ’til I read this piece in the Press of Atlantic City.

By Lester Holloway

Joseph Phillipe Lemercier Laroche, a Haitian, was aboard the ill-fated ship when it met a watery grave. Laroche was one of the 166 victims, while his white wife Juliette, and their children, survived the disaster.

This is yet another little piece of history we seldom hear about, like the fact that a black man Matthew Henson ‘discovered’ the North Pole at the same time as a fellow white explorer, but despite that feat, for many years historians ignored Henson.
