Friend of OBV Reverend Jesse in an article in yesterday’s Guardian Comment is Free, spoke of the continued abuse of stop and search powers by Police, still overwhelmingly plaguing Black individuals and communities.

National Black Police Association

More than 150 National Black Police Association delegates will spend the next two days in Sheffield for their annual conference.

Representing the Equality and Human Rights Commission I was invited to give a short address in this morning’s session.

Before that I found time to talk to those BME men and women who still have extraordinary challenges that their white colleagues don’t face. For example, during my talk I asked how many of them had been stopped and searched by fellow officers? Shockingly about one third responded that they had. One young sergeant told me that whilst in London with his Black friends he withdrew cash from a High St cash dispenser, then after going to a shop next door two officers were waiting at the entrance. Rio Ferdinand: less police will have a “massive impact”

Footballer Rio Ferdinand has always been known for his social commentary away from the football pitch.  Most recently his outspokenness over the problem of violent crime and gang culture among young people has led to concerned expressions over cuts to the Police budget.

The Metropolitan Police is now facing a deficit of nearly £470 million and it is expected that there will be a reduction of the number of officers on the streets.  According to sources there will be 900 fewer officers on London’s streets this financial year. (more…)

A large number of CCTV’s set up in Birmingham have damaged the relationship between residents and the Police a report has claimed.

Residents from the Washwood Heath and Sparkbrook districts in Birmingham are outraged at 218 new CCTV cameras set up in the areas.

The project which has cost approximately £3.5 million to implement has focused on areas with large Muslim communities. (more…)

A group of street cleaning employees are in the canteen chatting amongst each other.  One tells a joke about a plot to assassinate the pope.

Another colleague half hears the joke thinking it’s a conversation. They report the incident to the police.  What happened next was symptomatic of the USA McCarthy era, when you could be detained, and denounced as a enemy of the State if you had or were suspected to have any political leaning towards communism.  (more…)

Demands for inquiry after new police restraint death

The family of a Kingston University student who died less than weeks ago at a psychiatric hospital in Beckenham has called for the IPCC to investigate the circumstances into his death.

Olaseni Lewis 23 from South Norwood, who was studying to receive a Masters degree in IT and business management at Kingston University, was accompanied to the hospital by his family after they became concerned he was “behaving strangely, alternating between calm and agitated phases”. (more…)

The Garda have warned people who set up pages inciting racism on online social networks that they are open to prosecution, and even people who join these sites could face charges.

Sgt David McInerney of the Garda Racial and Intercultural Office said site hosts like Facebook were also “open to prosecution” if there was a valid complaint about racist online material. (more…)
